60′s DJ Turntable

This was a cake that I was able to have a lot of fun with. It started as a really simple design – a 1960′s style DJ turntable. The customer requested that a specific record be on the turntable – “Tenderly”. I decided to make the 45 record out of sugar glass, so that the surface of the record would have a different texture than the turntable. I then researched the record and did my best to recreate the label for the record. It took a little more effort, but I think it really made a difference in the cake.

One problem with this design was that 60′s turntables used by DJs were generally very unadorned and utilitarian. As a cake designer, that didn’t leave me a lot of options to make a cool looking cake. Also, there wasn’t a single style of turntable used – there seemed to almost be as many different styles of turntable as there were radio stations. So I decided to make an amalgam of designs, adding several features sometimes found on the players of that era. But the component I had the most fun with was my first ever “extreme” element – I used a display turntable inside the cake to make the turntable actually turn! I think this took what was a very simple looking design and made it into a pretty nifty cake…
